Daniel's favorite place in all the world is the woods next to his house. Though his mother swears she's imaginary, he's almost positive that his friend who lives there is real, and loves to visit with her while his parents pick morel mushrooms.
One day, the county begins charging to pick up trash. People decided they don't want to pay, and the secluded hill above the woods is the perfect place for them to use as an illegal dump. Daniel's parents won't let him return to the wood because of the trash, and his friend won't answer him, so he's determined to do something about it.
Over the years, his friend is forgotten, but his promise to himself isn't. He cleans up the woods, and one Earth Day, he discovers that his imaginary friend wasn't imaginary after all.
